ali richards - photographer

‘An Honest Hunt’ and was completed during a residency in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada, an old gold mining town with a strong First Nation community and a male to female ratio of 3:1.

Working across the breadth of an isolated community near the Arctic Circle, this work explores the lives of men woven around the activity of subsistence hunting and rituals and stereotypes of masculine pastimes.

From the initial decisive moments when the gunshot is fired to the labour intensive preparation of meat and skins, time passes quickly, the hunter grasps for a moment for contemplation. An unspoken intimacy exists between the hunter and the prey comparable to that between the photographer and the viewer.
